What is Yin Yoga?
Yin yoga is more than just holding postures for extended periods or working on the 12 meridians, which are pathways in the body that carry energy and are fundamental to traditional Chinese medicine. While it is true that Yin yoga targets the connective tissues, such as ligaments, bones, and joints, rather than focusing on the muscles, the practice encompasses much more than the physical aspect or the targeting of energy pathways.
For me, Yin yoga was about reconnecting with my feminine side, an essential part of myself that had been neglected due to my overly masculine, or yang, lifestyle. It’s important to understand that when we discuss yin and yang or feminine and masculine, we are referring to energies within us, not gender.
Yin yoga offers a deeper understanding of our nervous system and teaches us how to work with it. The only way to influence our nervous system is through our breath. In Yin yoga, asanas are held for a long duration, ranging from 1 to 10 minutes, and sometimes even longer in my classes. The key to navigating this intense experience is to work with the breath.
Yin yoga allows you to pause before you begin, to arrive fully in the present moment, and to nourish your body, mind, and soul. It inspires you to move through life with gentleness and selflove. When we learn to slow down and be gentle with ourselves, life reflects that gentleness back to us.
